(February 3, 2020) Chicago and Toronto based singer-songwriter Deanna Devore is new to us, but she straddles a line between pop and soul where so many great artists have trod over the years.
On her newest single, she delivers a sound that is somewhere between Yacht Rock and Sade. “Lately” is a downtempo number with an 80s pop sheen surrounded by a soulful edge.
Of course, if you listen to “Lately,” you’ll realize that is not Deanna singing. She wrote and produced the single, but has vocal assistance from a Mystery Singer (seriously, we don’t know who it is, but his nom de plume here is “M. Istri”). In these situations, that is typically the situation with an artist who is signed elsewhere and can’t issue a song under his name, but we don’t have any hints who it could be. We do know that both the vocal performance and the song hit the right nerve for us.
