(September 24, 2024) In 2020, I had the privilege of writing a First Listen story on a Craig Godwin song entitled “Love That Girl.” It was a ballad that showcased his ability to deliver an honest and intentional vocal performance. Four years later, Godwin returns with “Body,” his newest single that shows a shift in his musical direction, but keeps his musical building blocks intact.
A Long Island native, Godwin cut his vocal chops in church choirs and boy bands. This foundation has led him around the world writing, recording and collaborating. His experience in the industry comes through quite vividly on “Body” as the uptempo that will immediately take you on a trip back to mid 90s R&B. Steady drum and keyboard programming? Check. Layered vocals and harmonies? Check. All of this musical goodness gives Godwin the space to share his desires and feelings about a woman he’s interested in wrapped in a strong tenor vocal delivery complete with falsetto sprinkled in at various points.
While some songs that channel music from prior eras can be formulaic and dated, the great thing about “Body” is that Godwin leans in just enough to give it familiarity, but doesn’t try to force things. The result is a song that safely compliments other songs in Godwin’s catalog and showcases a different side of his vocal and musical ability.
