First Listen: Chris Chard feels “Freezin’ Sheets” on new single

(January 8, 2020) Portland strikes again. For anyone who has spent any time on SoulTracks.com, the preceding statement can only mean one thing – yet another soul music gem has emerged from the City of Roses.

SoulTrackers first got hipped to Portland’s vibrant soul and R&B scene back in 2015 when nine talented Portlanders contributed tracks to a compilation album titled Bespeak Love. Another Portland artist, Tahirah Memory, dropped Pride, a lovely bit of jazz infused soul, around the same time.

Bassist, producer, writer and session player Chris Chard and vocalist Toni Hill likely moved in those circles. Chard has been a presence in the Portland music scene for more than 20 years. Now, Chard and Hill have combined on the single “Freezin’ Sheets,” the lead single from Chard’s five track EP titled For the Fighters.

Chard and Hill combine to paint a musical picture with “Freezin’ Sheets,” and the picture is one that has resonated with nearly everybody at one time. The freezin’ sheets that Miss Toni Hill sings about reflect a relationship where the passions have cooled to the point that one side of the bed is cool because that side of the bed is empty.

That’s not a good feeling, but this song will go down really easy among those who enjoy strong and vivid lyrics delivered by a vocalist with a powerful voice and backed by a band that knows how to fuse soul and jazz. Check “Freezin’ Sheets” out here.
