(December 5, 2020) It’s been five years since Carmen Rodgers released her last project, the excellent Stargazer. The world seems to have turned upside down in that half a decade. Rodgers, however, proves to be consistent with the release of her new song “Again and Again.” Rodgers makes soulful and melodic songs, and she places a strong emphasis on the vocal and the lyric. There is a good reason for that.
Rodgers possess a confidently mature vocal instrument of the kind that is ideally suited for a ballad that finds that sweet spot between R&B and jazz. Lyrically, “Again and Again” tells the story of a woman who pledges a love that is transparent and constant. Those words are sensual, but they leave something to the imagination. In that way, “Again and Again” is something of a throwback.
“Again and Again” was produced Foreign Exchange member Nicolay and the familiarity between the two from their collaborations shines through on this track. Nicolay understands the need to craft an arrangement that frees Rodgers to display her range and precise phrasing. It sports elements of soul and jazz, creating a track that will find a welcome audience among lovers of that classic R&B sound. Check out “Again and Again” here.
