(May 11, 2022) Jazz singer and drummer Bryan Carter is on the rise with an authentic musical approach that incorporates soulful progressions and R&B-tinged vocals. Following the ever-groovy “Not Yet,” the latest preview from his I Believe album is a surprising and tasteful take on Roberta Flack’s 1982 ballad, “Making Love.” The Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager composition served as the theme to a groundbreaking dramatic film of the same name which explored same-sex relationships at a time when few major studios dared to broach the subject.
Flack’s timeless original take remains notable for its moving, somewhat melancholy, rendering. Carter embellishes the tune with a new groove and bright shades of orchestration while delivering a still pensive, yet hopeful, vocal performance. Although shorter in length, he conveys a dynamic range that is both calming and hopeful, with his personal connection to the lyrics resonating clearly. He has described his upcoming album as semi-autobiographical, with his own struggles of coming out addressed in “Making Love.” “Yes, I have feelings for you, but there’s all this baggage that I still carry, because it’s so new to me that this feels wrong,” he explains of relating to the storyline. “It’s more than just the hookup. How do I have a normal socialized relationship with this person?”
