(October 26, 2022) The band Brooklyn Funk Essentials filmed part of the video for their new song, “AA Side Single,” inside a brick-and-mortar record store with members pulling vinyl long play albums from the shelves. The balance of the video features live performance footage.
Something about that seems right because the Brooklyn Funk Essentials have built a career and a loyal following making the kind of music that I used to look for on my regular trips to the neighborhood record store to add some vinyl to my modest collection back in the day.
This band comes at you with a bouncy and deeply funky bass line, an electric organ that would be at home on a Saturday in the club or in church on Sunday morning and a soul ‘sanger’ in a call and response conversation with a tight horn section. And of course, “AA Side Single” sports clever lyrics that are full of humor and double entendre.
“AA Side Single” takes its inspiration from a 45-rpm single that has a potential hit on both sides so label promotes both tunes with expectation that both singles will be hits – in other words, a Double A side. The band takes that concept and transfers it to into the realm of romance on track that finds Brooklyn Funk Essentials putting the word out that a well-rounded partner won’t accept being treated like a B-side.
