First Listen: Bey Bright wants to be “More Than Friends”

(January 12, 2022) R&B renaissance man Bey Bright makes his intentions clear on his new slow jam, “More Than Friends.” The song finds him looking to change the terms of a relationship with a woman who is a good friend. He’s tired of that and he’s willing to assume the risk that comes with changing the status of a good friend to girlfriend. Often, these songs come from the standpoint of one person who is an unwilling occupant of the friend zone. That person sings their emotions to the universe because the object of their affection is either unaware, does not feel the same way, or is totally devoted to someone else (who is usually unworthy of said devotion).

“More Than Friends,” flips the script on that narrative. Bey takes the leap and makes his feelings known, and he finds someone who is of the same mind and heart. “More Than Friends” becomes a duet pairing Bright with vocalist Ezinne, with both acknowledging the feelings they have for each other and the risks that come with stepping out of the friend zone. The honesty expressed and the musical arrangement give “More Than Friends” an old school vibe.

The track has that slow groove bass line that is a throwback to the funk filled ballads of the 1970s and 80s. And whether Bey Bright and Ezinne are speaking their separate realities or singing in harmony, they give voice to all those who decide to say the quiet part loudly.
