(December 7, 2022) Although she recorded a handful of solo albums during the 1980s and ‘90s replete with soulful fare, Ava Cherry remains most recognized as a standout backing vocalist for David Bowie on his groundbreaking Young Americans album and several tours. She also found success as both a model and session singer for the likes of Luther Vandross and Paul Young and released her memoirs earlier this year.
Following several quietly released singles during the 2010s, Cherry has teamed up with the production team of Cool Million’s Rob Hardt and house vocalist David A. Tobin for a delightful, discofied soul nugget entitled “Love Shines So Bright.” Imbuing poetic lyrics with rich vocal hues of tenderness and clarity, Cherry sounds at home within the relaxed groove setting of soft keyboard fills, a pronounced bass line, and a gracefully building rhythm track. The sweet affair is punctuated by a gently glimmering sax solo which surrounds the quietly celebratory choruses and enhances the engaging melody and rhythmic factors. Let’s hope that this shining effort is but the first of more fine soul jams to come from Cherry soon!
Take a First Listen to “Love Shines So Bright” and welcome back Ava Cherry!
