(May 14, 2020) It’s been two years since we’ve received new music form the great Anthony Hamilton, but the soul giant returns today with a new single that is both fun and out of the ordinary. Written by Anthony Hamilton, Ed D Kane and produced by 9th Wonder (Mary J. Blige), “Back Together” features a simmering beat and strings wrapping around Hamilton’s instantly recognizable delivery. The biggest surprise? Hearing the legendary funkmeister Rick James joining in on the stripped-back midtempo, via a sample of picked up by 9th Wonder.
A lifelong fan of James, Hamilton says, “9th Wonder flipped the sample right in front of me. I wrote the song in a way to make it feel like Rick was singing along with me. ‘Back Together’ pays homage to one of the greats. To me, it’s also about love and getting back together with someone you knew was special. In this time of COVID-19, it took on a new meaning too. It means getting back to our lives. Be close to those who are special to you. We all want to be close to anybody right now.”
“Back Together” is the first single from Hamilton’s new label, My Music Box, and is a sneak peek at a planned Summer album. We can’t wait to hear the full thing. Check out “Back Together” below and tell us what you think.
