(May 17, 2022) “You’re Going to Get Next to Me” is the kind of classic soul song that is likely lost to all but hard core collectors. Bo Kirkland and Ruth Davis took the song a Top 20 hit in the UK in 1976. “You’re Going to Get Next to Me” is a breezy mid-tempo number that combined two singers that had good musical chemistry on a song that tells the story of two who realize they have an undeniable attraction no matter how much they try to deny it. It was representative of the lush, brassy duets released during that era, and it’s kind of surprising it didn’t get more traction on this side of the Atlantic.
So this tune was not an obvious choice for SoulTracks favorite Ania Garvey and John Carey to cover. But then too, maybe “You’re Going to Get Next to Me” is just the kind of song that needs to be remade. Garvey and Carey get a chance to put their unique spin on the tune, and they do just that by upping the tempo and the adding a bit funkier bounce to the bass line. Still, Garvey and Carey have a chemistry that comes through in the different way that approach the lyrics. Garvey attacks her vocals with grit and passion that plays off Carey’s smooth baritone.
