(April 13, 2020) In these recent trying times, music becomes one of the essential healing forces to divert us from stress and let’s face it – restore our groove thing. And through the past few decades, Italy has supplied an impressive list of talent, such as Change and Adika Pongo, who embrace the classic urban catalog spanning Chic, Barry White and more. SoulTracks first brought Adika Pongo to our attention with its 2011 release, Groovin’ Up. In 2018, we had a special First Listen of this septet for with the ballad, “You,” featuring ‘80’s R&B vocalist Christopher Williams.
Now on their latest First Listen, Adika Pongo exercises the boogie with a subtle remix version of their hit from Groovin’ Up, “Diamonds” (Expansion Records), thanks to the assistance of fellow native, disco/soul/R&B remixer Alex Di Cio (Rhianna, Teddy Pendergrass). “Diamonds” was originally written in Italian and was adapted in English and co-written by American songwriter and singer Robbie Dupree (well-known for his hits like “Steal Away”). Though the original remains intact on most counts, Di Cio sprinkles some snaps, claps, crackle and funk. From the sassy vocals, the crisp brass and the tasteful rhythm section, “Diamonds” injects a much-needed time out in the midst of uncertainty. So, go find those dancing shoes and enjoy!
