What we know today as Contemporary Jazz is a development that took several decades, merging a more traditional jazz with the hot sounds of R&B. It also was the result of a number of musical pioneers, none of whom were more influential than the late, great Grover Washington.
It has been a quarter century since the uber-talented Mr. Washington died, but we are still actively listening to his incredible music. Four years ago, SoulTrackers were enthused with the vinyl release of a 1997 concert album, Grover Live Vol. 1. But I’m not sure that even his biggest fans could have dreamed that producer and keyboardist Jason Miles would uncover another set of songs from another concert in Virginia the next year – enough to bring us the exciting sequel, Grover Live Vol. 2.
Featuring Donald Robinson on keyboards, Gerald Veasley on bass, Richard Lee Steacker on guitars, Richie Morales on drums, and Pablo Batista on congas and percussion, and produced by Miles (and Executive Produced by Christine Washington and Shana Washington), Grover Live 2 is a stellar live recording that will excite Grover fans around the world.
We’re proud to present Grover Live Vol. 2 as our Album of the Month. With a dozen exquisite tracks, we are transported back to a magical evening in Peekskill, New York almost three decades ago. What a find! Check it out below or LISTEN AT ANY OF THESE PLACES ONLINE.
