Even after more than a half century of making great music, it is tough to categorize The Fatback Band. Known as leaders in the R&B and funk movement in the 1980s, their work was the inspiration for a generation of hip-hop artists. And they’ve continued to adjust their sounds to the times, winning over SoulTrackers last year with the cool midtempo song, “Dem Words.”
Now as we enter 2022, Bill “Fatback” Curtis and company are back with another new single that bridges styles with flair. “Bang Bang (Room)” has 70s Parliament style funk at its core, but brings in elements of jazz and hip-hop in this fantastic remix by Kid Capri.
Bill tells us, “In my first collab using someone outside of the band, I teamed up with my nephew, Kid Capri, to remix a tune first released in 2019. Using the original funk recording team of Ron St. Germaine and Gerry Thomas, we produced ‘Bang Bang Room-The Remix.’ And let me tell you, it is bass, percussion and funk in overdrive. This remix will get into your bones! It will have you poppin’ lockin’, beating your feet, Azonto- groovin’, windin’ and grinding.”
The “Bang Bang” remix again shows The Fatback Band to be a group that is beyond time, fusing decades of musical history in a single song. This one is a winner. Check out “Bang Bang (Room),” below. It is our latest SoulTracks Choice Cut.
