Celebrating Maxine Nightingale’s Birthday – A Disco and Soul Star

Happy birthday to Maxine Nightingale, born November 2, 1952.

UK pop and soul singer Maxine Nightingale burst onto the music scene in the late 1960s as part of the stage productions of two monster musicals: Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. But it was her work a few years later as a solo singing artist that brought her to fame.

Her big breakthrough came in 1975 with the release of “Right Back Where We Started From,” a joyous, disco-infused track that became an international hit, reaching the Top 10 on both U.K. and U.S. charts. The song’s catchy melody and Nightingale’s energetic performance solidified her status as a soul and disco icon. She followed up with hits like “Love Hit Me” and “Lead Me On,” the latter of which topped U.S. adult contemporary charts and became a staple of the era’s soft rock and soul radio. Her biggest hit was 1975’s bouncy “Right Back Where We Started From,” and she returned to the top 10 three years later with the soft ballad “Lead Me On.”

Maxine continues to perform around the world. Happy birthday!
