Uncle Sam

Quick Look:

Born: May 31, 1971

In the late 1990s, a smooth-voiced balladeer named Uncle Sam briefly took the R&B world by storm with a voice that recalled the great crooners of decades past. Born Sam Turner in Detroit, Michigan, he was discovered and signed by industry legend Nathan Morris of Boyz II Men, who helped shepherd his 1997 self-titled debut album on Stonecreek Records, an imprint of Epic.

Uncle Sam’s breakthrough came with the heartfelt single “I Don’t Ever Want to See You Again,” a breakup anthem written and produced by Morris that struck a chord with fans of contemporary and classic soul alike. The song soared into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hit #2 on the R&B chart, becoming a gold-certified hit. It led his self-titled debut album right into the Billboard Top 10.

Despite his obvious talent, Uncle Sam was unable to replicate the success of his initial album, and he eventually transitioned to Gospel music and became a pastor. He continues to perform in multi-artist shows. He also opened a tutoring service for kids in the Atlanta area.
