The New Jersey Connection

For fans of the underground funk and soul scene, The New Jersey Connection is one of those rare, cherished gems—an act that made a big impact with just a few releases. Emerging in the early 1980s from the Garden State, this group embodied the sophisticated blend of jazz, funk, and R&B that defined an era. Their music was both infectious and refined, making them a sought-after name among crate diggers and soul aficionados.

The New Jersey Connection was formed with a vision of creating groove-driven, jazz-inflected dance music that could stand toe-to-toe with the best funk outfits of the time. Saxophonist and songwriter Benny Barksdale, Jr. assembled a talented lineup that included Mark Johnson (guitar), Kenny Johnson (bass), Michael Campbell (drums), Rudy Ramos (percussion), Doug Bynum (keyboards), Mike Beverly (trumpet), and vocalists Val Barksdale, Diane Jenkins, and Eddie Saunders.

In 1981, the group delivered its signature cut, “Love Don’t Come Easy,” a slice of pure dancefloor magic laced with tight horns, a driving bassline, and an irresistible hook. Released on Carnival Records, the song became an underground classic, finding its way into DJ rotations and becoming a staple in rare groove collections.

Despite the buzz surrounding “Love Don’t Come Easy,” The New Jersey Connection never released a full-length album during its initial run. However, the group’s music endured, rediscovered by collectors and soul lovers decades later. In the 2010s, renewed interest in their work led to the release of New Jersey Connection, a compilation that showcased the band’s tight musicianship and timeless appeal.

Today, The New Jersey Connection remains a beloved name in the world of rare groove, proving that sometimes, one great record is all it takes to secure a lasting legacy. Their music continues to be spun by DJs and sampled by producers, ensuring that their signature sound lives on.
