Sean Mauricette a.k.a. SUBLIMINAL is a jack of all trades. Part beat-boxer, DJ, lyricist and producer, this is the unique combination that makes up Subliminal’s style.
Entering into Hip-Hop at the ripe age of 6, by the age of 12, Subliminal began to experiment with his tape and record players in an effort to create mix tapes that he enjoyed. As this experiment progressed he became overwhelmed by the music and the new sounds he could create. When the beats he was using weren’t enough, he began to create new sounds with his voice, thus creating the first inkling of Subliminal. At this time he began to enter talent shows around the Metro Toronto Area, and was winner of many shows in the DJ, beat-boxing and freestyle fields. It was at this point that he decided to take his skills and use them for public performances.
In 1998 Subliminal toured Canada and Western Europe as well as performed the 1999 Much Music Video Awards and opened for such recording artists as Mos Def, D12, Arrested Development and Jagged Edge to name a few. Subliminal brings passion and new flavor to the shows. Before the performance begins, he whips the crowd into a frenzy with his tight mixes and incredible energy. During the shows he drops amazing voice-overs, imitations of popular artists, beat-boxing and turntable tricks that always leaves the crowd in awe.
Currently a member of ACTRA Subliminal also has his eyes on acting. Working alongside actors such as Kevin Bacon, Howie Mandel and Jill Scott, Subliminal has also recently finished his first feature film called the Phantom Punch directed by Robert Townsend, starring Ving Rhames.
As of December 1999, Subliminal has produced, directed and performed numerous radio commercials along with television commercials for Sony Music Canada, Sprite, McDonalds and Kellog’s Pop-tarts. Known to some as an interpretive sound artist, Subliminal is also responsible for producing the theme music for CBC radios daily show, Here and Now.
But where the river flows, it must divide. When he isn’t promoting his debut album or performing, you will find Subliminal working along side other architects in their Toronto based offices. A graduate from the University of Toronto’s faculty or Architecture, Subliminal is the first ever recipient of the Arts and Culture award presented to him from the Black Students Association of the University of Toronto. Currently the host and key note speaker for the P.U.L.L. Project (Peace, Unity, Leadership, and Learning), Subliminal knows that youth need encouragement to follow the right path and not be deterred by the negative stereotypes and images perpetuated by society. Subliminal was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the Councilors Association of Ontario for all his work with the grade school, middle school and high school students. Whether lecturing or mentoring underprivileged teens Subliminal actively plays the role.
Subliminal has recently launched his self produced debut album entitled TRAINATHOUGHT. A style of hip hop he calls €˜Soul-Hop’, which is less concerned with negativity and speaks more to matters of the soul.
From designing new beats and scratches to shows and skyscrapers, Subliminal constantly reinvents formulas for success
