Quick Look:

Born: August 8, 1933

Died: August 13, 1982

Joe Tex (1935-1982) was a pioneering American singer and songwriter who left an indelible mark on the realms of soul, R&B, and funk music. Born Joseph Arrington Jr. in Rogers, Texas, Tex began his musical career in gospel before transitioning to secular music in the early 1960s.

Tex’s distinctive voice and charismatic stage presence propelled him to stardom with hits like “Hold What You’ve Got” (1964) and “Skinny Legs and All” (1967), which showcased his ability to blend soulful melodies with humorous and often socially conscious lyrics.

In the 1970s, Joe Tex continued to evolve as an artist, exploring funk and disco influences while maintaining his soulful roots. His album I Gotcha (1972) became a commercial success, featuring the title track that topped the charts and solidified his reputation as a dynamic performer.

Tragically, Joe Tex passed away in 1982, but his legacy lives on through his timeless recordings and influence on subsequent generations of musicians.
