Quick Look:

Born: January 31, 1951

Few names in music history embody the essence of feel-good, dancefloor-ready anthems like Harry Wayne Casey, aka “KC,” whose band became synonymous with the disco era of the late 1970s

In the mid 70s, Casey teamed up with bassist Richard Finch to create KC and the Sunshine Band, a musical powerhouse with a fun, danceable sound that blended funk, disco, and soul. Their debut album, Do It Good, hinted at greatness, but it was the follow-up, KC and the Sunshine Band, which catapulted them to stardom with hits like “Get Down Tonight” and “That’s the Way (I Like It).”

The group continued to dominate the charts with their infectious grooves, releasing a string of albums that solidified their place in music history. Tracks like “Shake Your Booty,” “Boogie Shoes,” and the Grammy-winning “I’m Your Boogie Man” kept them at the top of the dance music world and earned them international acclaim. By the end of the 1970s, KC and the Sunshine Band had become a household name, racking up multiple platinum records and Grammy Awards.

Though the disco wave eventually waned, Harry continued to perform, write, and record, keeping the Sunshine Band’s legacy alive. Today, Harry Casey remains active in the music scene, touring with KC and the Sunshine Band and collaborating on special projects. His influence on dance music and his ability to connect with audiences of all ages ensure his legacy endures. For Harry Casey, the music hasn’t stopped—it’s just found new ways to shine.
