(June 22, 2021) You can tell a lot about a musician by his connections, and with connections that include Prince, Alexander O’Neal, Donny Osmond, Michael Bolton and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, we know that Jason Peterson DeLaire can play any style of music. He comes from a musical family in the Minneapolis area, and he’s been working professionally since the age of 15, so DeLaire definitely has the polish.

He’s adept in pop, funk, R&B and jazz, just to name a few genres, but he’s really made a name for himself as a contemporary jazz artist. His latest single, “Check Please,” is both celebratory and anticipatory. A top-flight saxophonist and keyboardist, DeLaire teams with and engages in energetic musical conversations with guitarist Chris Camozzi. DeLaire and Camozzi were bandmates and friends from their days touring as a part of Michael Bolton’s band, and their familiarity with each other is apparent when you hear how they trade solos throughout this track. Cammozi’s playing brings some rock as well as jazz touches to this track.

The song’s title refers to a phrase that we once took for granted in those pre-pandemic days when we sat in restaurants rather than doing curbside and carry out services or mastering the intricacies of baking our own bread. Those days are returning as communities relax the regulations that made gathering difficult. Who doesn’t want to retreat to their favorite eatery or watering hole after a long workday or when hanging out with friends? “Check Please” captures the energy and freedom that we’ve missed for the past 15 months. Check it out here.
