Another Groove: Glen Hansard Likes To “Roll On Slow”

July 10, 2018 – Welcome to Another Groove, our series dedicated to new music that is neither pure soul nor R&B, but which contains elements of those genres and may please your ears. This week we feature “Roll On Slow” by Glen Hansard.

Hansard is an Irish singer, songwriter and guitarist who first rose to fame as a member of the duo Swell Season, which starred in the music-themed film Once. The band’s track “Falling Slowly” from that movie won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2007. Hansard has been solo for several years now and usually trades in earthy, authentic and largely acoustic folk and roots rock. But on his latest album Between Two Shores, released earlier this year, Hansard worked from a larger palette and incorporated sounds and textures that took him on a wonderful detour into bluesy soul. Our featured track finds Hansard layering some Memphis-style horns and gospel organ over a metronomic rock groove, the sum of which is a delightful, propulsive slice of Americana. Enjoy.
