Flashback Soul: Derek Martin is “Daddy Rollin’ Stone”

lmao2

Some tracks  grab you by the shirt collar in the opening seconds and take you on a joyride, not letting go until the last drumbeat.  In 1963, the soul artist Derek Martin released just such a ticket to ride with his single “Daddy Rollin’ Stone.”

Written and recorded  originally by Otis Blackwell as a blues crawl in 1953, Martin transformed the song into an R&B dance track featuring a beguiling beat and high-pitched, adoring background vocals. Have a listen somewhere you have privacy or risk involuntarily busting a move in front of your family or co-workers!  Enjoy.
