First Listen: U-Nam “Spices” up our lives

(September 26, 2016) Jazz and funk guitarist U-Nam went for a certain style and vibe on his new album, Surface Level. He wanted to capture that smooth and upbeat feel of the funk scene of the late 1970s and especially the early to mid 80s. That comes across in a couple of cover songs featured on Surface Level – Dayton’s “The Sound of Music” and the track featured in this First Listen. “Spice of Life.”

A flush of familiarity will come over fans of the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer from the tune’s opening note. The Transfer and the tight harmonies and distinct individual voices where everywhere during the 1980s, and stood as a testament to the artistic diversity of pop radio during that era. U-Nam uses his guitar to take the place of the vocal quartet on this energetic remake. Check it out.
