In April of 2016, it had been more than a decade since we had heard from former child prodigy and soul music star Tevin Campbell. But the 39 year old singer and stage performer was working on new music, and gave us the pleasant surprise of a single relese, in the form of the Alex Cantrell composition, “Safer On The Ground.”
The big sounding ballad had Tevin’s unmistakeable singing upfront, and was what we hoped was a sneak peek at a new album, which didn’t arrive. The song didn’t make the waves it deserved, but it was still appreciated by his longtime fans. You may not have heard it before, and it is now out of print, so we would call “Safer On The Ground” as a true SoulTracks Lost Gem.
