First Listen: ConFunkShun’s Eric EQ Young gives “Everything” on new single

Google Eric “EQ” Young’s name, and a list of videos of him in his primary line of work as the bass player for ConFunkShun are the first things that you will see. There’s a reason for that: Young is a technician and showman on the bass guitar. If you are a fan of the slap bass technique perfected by legends such Larry Graham and Marcus Miller, Young’s work with ConFunkShun will rank as required viewing. His showmanship and virtuosity perfectly illustrate why funk bassists will not suffer the unknown man fate of their rock brethren.

Legend has it that Young so impressed Soul Train host Don Cornelius that the host gave him the nickname “EQ.” Work of his bass prowess got around to Michael Cooper, who knew that he needed a top flight bass man when ConFunkShun reconstituted in the 1990s – a role that he has ably filled ever since.

With his latest solo effort, Young steps into the role occupied by Cooper and Felton Pilate – that as lead vocalist. Young walks into that role fully on the simmer ballad “My Everything,” a duet with SOS band lead vocalist Celia Doughty. Give it a listen.
