First Listen: Erik Rico loves that “Disco Funk”

(July 3, 2025) Eclectic is one word that can be used to describe Erik Rico. It might just be the best word. He’s not content to be limited to one genre, one instrument or wear one hat. He’s worked with a diverse roster of artists, is adept at guitar, bass, drums, piano, keyboards and percussion, and has performed soul, hip-hop, dance, reggae and, on his latest single, funk.

“Disco Funk” is an on-the-one trip down memory lane for those of us who grew up during the era of self-contained funk bands. Loopy synthesizer riffs bounce off an elastic foundation laid down by a thumping bass line and percolating percussion. Jangling and slashing guitars converse with kicking drums. You can even hear some churchy electric organ. Everything that drew us to the dance floors and skating rink back in the 1970s can be heard in Rico’s fun and funky journey down memory lane.

You can be forgiven for thinking thinking this is Parliament or Graham Central Station. It’s Erik Rico, a man of all musical seasons who studied well and graduated with honors from the School of Funk. Check him out here.
