(April 16, 2025) In most cases, songwriters will hear from listeners and fans how they were significantly impacted by the music and songs created. Sometimes, a songwriter turns inward and provides self-motivation from a musical work that stems from personal experiences. This is the case for Geo Baddoo’s newest single, “My Turn.”
This London based songstress, whose legendary influences include Erykah Badu, Safe and Tracy Chapman, states that the genesis of “My Turn” comes from an assessment of what she was feeling at the time and where she wanted to go. Musically it takes a minimalist approach that works well, with more of an emphasis on Baddoo’s vocals and harmonies. Looking to overcome fears and break down boundaries, Baddoo clearly understands her worth on this track. Confidently stating lines such as “I’ll take my seat up at the table, it’s my turn…I was given a gift and I’m grateful, trust me I know what it’s made for…” enables the listener to hear the empowerment that Baddoo feels.
“When writing the lyrics, I felt myself calling in energy that can strengthen me while rejecting repetitive cycles of negativity. It’s about being real with myself.” This is a quote from Baddoo that described to her approach to writing “My Turn.” After hearing the finished product, it is clear that her ability to show honesty and transparency in the midst of turning inward results in a song that many others will find strength in.
