Usher and H.E.R. shine together on The Color Purple's "Risk It All"

    (December 26, 2023) When it comes down to movie soundtracks, the phrase Music Inspired By and From can go several directions.  Occasionally, this concept becomes a compilation of hit songs that are not featured in the movie.  In the case of the 2023 holiday blockbuster movie inspired by the 1985 Oscar winning The Color Purple, the 37-track set combines the movie soundtrack based on the 2008 Broadway and 2015 revival productions, plus original music enhancing the film’s plot.  Understandably, the soundtrack’s co-executive producer Quincy Jones, who possesses a rich history with The Color Purple from the beginning, has much experience in putting together this comprehensive musical packaging by choosing the best talent possible.

    Among the superstar lineup performing the newer tracks are The Color Purple cast member Fantasia and Mary J. Blige.  On our latest First Listen installment, Usher and H.E.R. team on “Risk It All” (Water Tower/gamma), the second single chosen from the soundtrack (the first being Alicia Keys’ “Lifeline”). 

    The H.E.R./Jimmy Napes production never goes over the top, with the simple piano accompaniment permitting the R&B superstars to relay subject matter relating to the movie’s storylines regarding the strength of black culture during troublesome times.  And there’s a soulful aftertaste from the opening vocal adlibs in a pristine duet breaking down emotions in striving for perseverance through trials: “Like a condition/Like a religion/ So easily mistreated/Scary decision.” While not a part of the Broadway production, “Risk It All” is more than just a filler pop hit moment from Usher and H.E.R.  Check it out!
