(June 20, 2023) We’ve been happily following the career Toronto songstress Tanika Charles for several years now, and she has always delivered the goods, most recently on her wonderful 2022 album Papillon de Nuit. Now for her follow up, Tanika stripping away any pretense to fashion a live EP that showcases her amazing vocal instrument in a very personal fashion.
The five-song Union Sessions project was recorded live at Union Sound in Toronto, and Tanika and her band bring to the studio the feel of a sweaty late night club show. And the intimacy of that performance is felt on the breathtaking new version of “Think of You (Live In Studio),” a song originally taken from Tanika’s What? What! What?! EP.
Tanika explains of the song, “We carry our past relationships forward with us in one way or another, but some of those memories can themselves be a weighty burden. Rather than wistful remembrance, ‘Think of You’ wishes to not have to think of that ex at all. To not be laden with the scars and damages of the past, but also allow an honest admission of the allure that spawned the avoidable mess.”
The original version was a winner, but Tanika Charles and band bring a new immediacy to “Think of You” on the live version, which is captured in black and white on the accompanying studio video. We’re proud to present the World Premiere of this striking performance. Check it out below.
