(November 17, 2024) The song “My Favorite Things” has been a jazz standard ever since John Coltrane draped his sheets of sound on the melody made famous by the film The Sound of Music. It’s always going to be a challenge to catch the Trane, but jazz singer Nicole Henry makes her own mark in her rendition that blends Afro-Latin percussion with jazz improvisation from a slithery Harmon muted horn and Spanish guitars.
Henry, who has proven to be an excellent vocal interpreter of jazz, as well as R&B and pop tunes throughout her career, showcases her range on her take on “My Favorite Things.” Henry is the first among equals on this performance. That musical egalitarianism can be heard in the call and response between Henry and trumpeter Jean Caze.
Meanwhile, the work of drummer David Chiverton and percussionist Richard Bravo as well as the performance by Camilo Velandia on the guitar transform from the snowy Alps to a holiday in the Caribbean.
Henry’s jazzy and soulful take on “My Favorite Things” is set to be released on Nov. 22, just as we prepare for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season. The release also coincides with Henry’s annual holiday benefit that takes place in Miami. Check out our World Premiere of Nicole Henry’s version of “My Favorite Things” here.
