(February 1, 2023) Back in 1991, Phyllis Hyman delivered another classic ballad from her Prime of My Life album, via the smoldering Gene McDaniels/Carrie Thompson tune “Meet Me On The Moon.” It was an unadulterated song of romance and devotion, and it became a fan favorite from the latter days of Hyman’s recording career.
Thirty-two years later, it seems only fitting that one of our favorite female vocalists of the ’20s is taking on Hyman’s classic and giving it a beautifully fresh take. New Jersey based singer Mary Cross (nicknamed the “Mother of Cool Smoke”) won over SoulTrackers back in 2021 with “Promise,” a cut that led to her nomination as Female Vocalist of the Year in the SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Awards, and prompted our reviewer Howard Dukes to compare her dulcet tones and stage presence to both Hyman and the late, great Nancy Wilson.
Cross brings all that vocal power to “Meet Me On The Moon,” a lush updating that is both alluring and dramatic in its presentation. And Cross again shows that she can flat out sing. This is compelling late night listening for adult soul fans, and we’re proud to present its World Premiere. Check out “Meet Me On The Moon” below.
