World Premiere: Glenn Jones and The O’Jays’ Eric Nolan deliver a Switch classic

(February 13, 2024) Though their time in the spotlight was relatively brief, the members of the vocal group Switch hold a special place for soul music fans around the world – particularly for their Quiet Storm smashes “There’ll Never Be,” “I Call Your Name” and the smooth “I Wanna Be Closer.”

Those songs have remained radio staples more than four decades after their release, and a group of stars is now giving one of them shine again in a tasty cover. Longtime O’Jays singer Eric Nolan has brought together saxman Tony Exum, Jr. and soul music legend Glenn Jones for a new version  of “I Wanna Be Closer” that should have soul music fans cheering.

With a soaring falsetto, Nolan displays his terrific vocal range, and Jones assertively offsets that sweetness with a typically gritty lead vocal. And its all rounded out by Exum’s smooth sax stylings.

This release not only pays beautiful tribute to the original version, but also reminds us of what an eternal song it is. And it makes you want to bring that one you love just a little bit closer to you.

We’re proud to present the World Premiere of “I Wanna Be Closer.” Check it out below and welcome these stars back to SoulTracks.
