(September 19, 2022) Chicago native singer and songwriter DMo! (also known as D Maurice) has been a fixture in the indie soul community for two decades, both as a solo artist and as part of the talented team that has worked with Indie Soul King Eric Roberson.
We love DMo! in both roles, but get a special thrill when he releases his too-infrequent solo work. That itch will get scratched soon with the release of his new album, Also Known As. And for a sneak peek from the album, we have a tasty new single that features a duet with Moonchild singer Amber Navran.
“FriendZone” is a tale of that blurry spot in a relationship where two people have to make a decision the nature of their connection and where it is going to go – and the risks that that decision will create. But DMo! takes it in a different, more positive direction. He tells us, “The song ‘FriendZone’ is a play on the phrase that most younger people take as a negative. Well, as you get older and wiser, you realize that your ‘greatest friend can also be your greatest lover,’ to quote a good friend. The ‘FriendZone’ doesn’t have to be a bad thing, it’s all in how you perceive it to be. I’m glad to be able to write to a different perspective with this song.
Whether you view being in the “FriendZone” as a blessing or a curse, the song is all blessing, a cool midtempo with beautifully mashed up elements of soul, jazz and hip-hop, made all the more interesting by the unusual combination of DMo’s gospel-tinged voice and Navran’s ethereal tones.
“FriendZone” is a great introduction to an album we can’t wait to hear. Check out the World Premiere video for “FriendZone” below.
