World Premiere: Con Brio shines on “Don’t Mind Me”

(May 21, 2024) Con Brio is defined as music that is performed with spirit, vigor, or liveliness. The English translation from the term’s Italian roots is “with energy.” The band Con Brio sought to encapsulate that spirit on its latest single, “Don’t Mind Me,” which is also the first song written for the band’s new lead vocalist, Viveca Hawkins.

AJ McKinley, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, noted that they wanted to write a song that accentuated Hawkins’ qualities as a singer. He noted that Hawkins can sing anything from rock bangers to soulful ballads, and the group wanted to write a tune that displayed her specific skills.

“We took turns sharing music that inspired us, which led to a discussion about trying to create a sound that was a little darker, sexier while also trying to dig a little deeper into the funk/groove roots of the band. ‘Don’t Mind Me’ was one of the first songs that came out from those discussions,”  McKinley said.

The final product, “Don’t Mind Me” is darkly introspective, while possessing a fusion of brassy funk with rock guitar flourishes. Hawkins sings about a person who is breaking down mentally in plain sight. The title hints at what the lyrics deliver; someone who during an emotional meltdown. Her placid appearance is a façade masking someone dealing with an existential crisis.

Hawkins’ vocal gives “Don’t Mind Me” a dark energy. Check out our World Premiere of the song here.
