VH1 Storytellers covers Maxwell

The mood was definitely set for “Sumthin’ Sumthin’” as Maxwell and his 10-piece, all-star band eased into a soul-filled set in front of an intimate 150-member audience at Metropolis Studios in NYC on May 11th.  The double Grammy-winning and multi-platinum artist connected immediately with the crowd as he beamed with pride over his involvement with the iconic series declaring, “Storytellers has been around for 15 years, and it’s been 15 years since I put out my first album ‘Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite’…You have this dream as a kid, and the next thing you know you’re at ‘VH1 Storytellers’ and the crowd is singing along to your songs. It’s a blessing.”

The evening’s 12-song set highlighted Maxwell’s groove-filled catalogue of hits with several tracks from the Grammy Award-winning, “BLACKsummers’night.” Taking a break from preparing for the sequel to that album, VH1 took Maxwell back in time to play past favorites and celebrate with fans. The highly anticipated new album, “SUMMERS’,” will be released soon.

Always the romantic, Maxwell was happy to delve into the meaning of the Grammy-winning “Pretty Wings.” He explained, “Sometimes love doesn’t work out, sometimes it’s bad timing, and sometimes you meet a girl who shows you why God created women” before dedicating the song to “all the people who have lost and will find love again.” “Fistful of Tears” brought a decidedly emotional moment to the evening as Maxwell revealed, “This song is inspired by war.  I hate that we’re fighting and I can’t wait for the troops to come back….it’s also about trying to express to someone who is so beautiful and amazing  and yet they just can’t see that in themselves.” Towards the end of the evening in a “VH1 Storytellers” first, Maxwell bounded off the stage and into an ecstatic audience during “Get To Know You” as he gathered up a mass of star-struck fans to join him for an impromptu dance party at the front of the crowd.  The ever-charismatic crooner joked, “I mean come on, wouldn’t you?”

For viewers at home, they will gain a unique opportunity to hear Maxwell share additional stories and insight into his songwriting process and career.

This exclusive performance, “VH1 Storytellers: Maxwell” will premiere on Friday, June 17th at 11 PM ET/PT.
