(March 30, 2016) We are very sad to inform SoulTrackers of the death of Larry Payton, the very talented drummer for the ultra-funky Brooklyn group that was a consistent hitmaking machine for nearly a decade in the 70s and early 80s.
When it came to funky grooves and a tight sound, there weren’t many acts better than Brass Construction. Led by the musical genius, pianist, flautist, producer and singer Randy Muller, who also went on to form Skyy, BC came out of the box on fire in 1976 with “Movin’,” a dance track that foreshadowed the emergence of East Coast funk and disco over the following years. It topped the charts, only to be followed up by another eternal jam, “Changin’.”
Over the next decade. Brass Construction issued a staggering eight albums and charted with such smashes as “Can You See The Light,” “The Message,” and “Ha Cha Cha.” And the underpinning that made also those dance hits shine was Payton’s everpresent beat. Even a cursory listen to those classic hits reminds us of just how good he was.
