(September 16, 2017) We are sad to inform SoulTrackers of the death of King Raymond Green, founder of the funk band Black Heat and later lead singer for latter day versions of The Flamingos and The Clovers.
Green formed Black Heat as a hot eight piece funk band in the early 70s. The group scored a moderate hit with the excellent, funky midtempo song “No Time To Burn,” but never hit the level of popularity that their talent foretold. They split in the late 70s.
Of course, the Clovers are a legendary R&B acts that has spanned seven decades. The quintet was formed in the late 1940s and scored dozens of big hits in the 1950s and 60s, including “Fool, Fool, Fool,” “Lovey Dovey” and “Don’t You Know I Love You.” Over the years, the group has had over 30 members, and Green was most recently the lead singer in the current version of the group led by half century member and bass singer Harold Winley.
The DC-based Green also established himself as a top tier audio engineer, and worked with many R&B greats, including Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers, Harvey Fuqua and Carlos Santana, and led his own group, King Raymond Green and Powerhouse.
