We’ve just learned from SoulTracks friend Darryl Payne of the death of legendary record executive and producer Gabe Vigorito, known best for his work with Kool & the Gang. As Darryl announced it:
With a very heavy heart – Gabe Vigorito, President and Owner of De-Lite Records, has passed away. Kool & the Gan, Crown Heights Affair, The Kay Gees and many other legendary artists were signed to De-Lite Records. He was so brilliant the way his company promoted their records when major labels dominated the music business. I HAD THE PLEASURE OF LEARNING SO MUCH FROM THIS MAN SINCE THE MID 1970″s. Many people have called me asking how is Gabe. He is an UNSUNG HERO In American Music . One of the LAST TRUE RECORD MEN FROM YEARS PAST. Love you always Gabe. RIP
In addition to being a label owner, Vigorito was credited as an Executive Producer or Mixer on many of Kool & the Gang’s biggest hits, including their biggest song, “Celebrate.” Mr. Vigorito will be missed.
