Is former Temptations lead singer Theo Peoples back with the Four Tops?

(January 12, 2025) The Four Tops have been part of our lives for more than six decades, and they keep chugging along in 2025, apparently with the addition of an old friend.

Tops fans no doubt remember Theo Peoples, the powerful vocalist who has the distinction of serving as both the lead singer of The Temptations and The Four Tops. Peoples’ began with The Temptations in the 90s, and his contributions were captured on two celebrated albums: For Lover’s Only and the Grammy-winning, platinum-certified Phoenix Rising. On For Lover’s Only, Peoples’ stunning rendition of “Night and Day” became a standout track, even earning a place on the soundtrack of the hit film What Women Want. As both a singer and songwriter, he left an mark, penning the heartfelt ballad “This Is My Promise” and taking center stage on the group’s last #1 hit, 1997’s “Stay.”

In 1998, after leaving the Temptations, Peoples joined The Four Tops, and became lead singer of that group following Levi Stubbs’ retirement due to health problems. Peoples’ powerful vocals fronted the group for a dozen years, including on the excellent single “Miles Away.” He left the Four Tops and continued as a solo artist in the 2010s, recording some solo singles but generally having a smaller public presence.

With the 2024 retirement and passing of Duke Fakir, the last original member of the Four Tops, the group pledged to continue on with longtime members Ronnie McNeir, Lawrence Payton, Jr. (son of founding member Lawrence Payton, Sr.), Alexander Morris and the newest member, singer Michael Brock.

But now as we begin 2025, Theo Peoples appears to be back with the Four Tops (replacing Morris) after a decade and a half absence, performing in several cities as part of the “Tempts and Tops” tour with The Temptations, and deftly handling lead vocals again. We have not received formal confirmation from the Tops, but the videos we’ve seen on YouTube seem to confirm the new lineup – and remind us how great the group still sounds.
