Worried family of The Supremes’ Cindy Birdsong seeks legal conservatorship

(July 3, 2023) This is sad news any way you look at it. Vulture has reported that the family of longtime Supremes Cindy Birdsong is seeking a legal conservatorship for the ailing star, in part because of disagreements between the family and longtime Birdsong friend Rochelle Lander. The family has asked that Birdsong’s brother, Ronald Birdsong and manager Brad Herman, be named co-conservators for the 83 year old singer.

Birdsong has reportedly suffered several strokes over the years, and disputes between her family and Lander, with whom she has been living, are long documented.

Born on December 15, 1939, in Mount Holly, New Jersey, Birdsong first gained prominence as a member of Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles before joining The Supremes as the replacement for Flo Ballard. During her time with the Supremes, the group became among the most popular acts in the world, with dozens of top hits. She remained with The Supremes for several years after the departure of lead singer Diana Ross.

After her time with The Supremes, Birdsong embarked on a solo career. She released her several singles including the charting hit “Dancing Room.” She also embarked on a few Supremes reunions, first at the Motown 25 special in 1983 and the Former Ladies of the Supremes tour (with Jean Terrell and Scherrie Payne) in 1986. She also briefly reunited with The Bluebells (without Patti Labelle) in 2000.
