(January 19, 2020) The Black Pumas may be the best soul group that soul music fans don’t know. Formed only two years ago in Austin, Texas by Grammy winning guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada and versatile singer Eric Burton, the duo began playing in local clubs, and knew that they had something special together.
That chemistry comes through big time on their self-titled debut album that is an engaging blend of styles from Stax to Led Zeppelin. But make no mistake about it, this is soul music, with Burton’s vocals – reminiscent of Sam Moore of Sam and Dave fame – taking the strong compositions to deep places that only a transcendent singer can do.
The duo’s single “Colors” is a legitimate hit and boasts the kind of message of love and fellowship that is welcome in 2020:
With all my favorite colors, yes, sir
All my favorite colors, right on
My sisters and my brothers
See ’em like no other
All my favorite colors
Their nomination for Best New Artist in the 2020 Grammys (to be presented on January 26) was a surprise, and a welcome one. In a time when radio appears to be dominated by mindless pop and hip-hop, The Black Pumas are a welcome change, and a recognition of the half century of music that informed their style.
We’re all on board for this one. Check out Black Pumas below, SoulTrackers, and tell us what you think.
