Ten years after her battle with cancer, Alex Nester will take the stage Saturday, June 18th at the world-famous Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The event, “#BurnItDown…To Rise Above It” (appealing to the Twitter generation), is set to feature LA area bands, including Nester, who says “I want give back the only way I know how—through music”. Nester (who has opened for such acts as Earth Wind & Fire and Chicago and currently touring with Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Tito Jackson) has a goal of raising $10,000 through ticket sales, merchandise, donations, and prizes including a trip for two to the Bahamas to the highest donor at the event courtesy of Aqua Blue Travels.
But fundraising and milestones aside, the concert has an even larger meaning for Nester. Let’s go back to the year 2000. At just 16 years of age she had already tracked hundreds of studio hours and was set to begin recording her debut solo release with veteran producer, Robby Robinson (Frankie Valli, Martha Reeves), when it all came to a screeching halt with an unexpected visit to the emergency room. In the months that followed, instead of attending recording sessions Nester found herself attending chemotherapy sessions. The diagnosis: Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. “When I heard the word ‘cancer’ I equated that to ‘death-sentence’. I had no idea what to expect,” says Nester reflecting on the ordeal. “But now I know that wasn’t the case. In fact, I seem to run into more and more survivors thanks to the advances in medicine and research; much of it funded by organizations like the American Cancer Society. That’s why I feel compelled to give back–I owe them everything.”
The night will also mark the release of Nester’s sophomore album, “BURN IT DOWN”, which will be given away to all in attendance. When asked about her music style she replied, “I feel my bout with cancer has helped shape my sound. It’s organic music–No autotune! I tend to write about love, faith, positivity, and healing–everything that was given to me when I was down.”
The Troubadour is located at 9081 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069. Doors will open for the June 18th event at 7:30PM. For tickets visit For tickets visit www.Troubadour.com.
