Blowing Our Minds: All the top new albums coming out on August 28

aug28

(August 3, 2020) It has been a year of some frustration for soul music lovers. While some of our favorite artists have shown amazing creativity during the months of quarantine, with new songs and online concerts to break up our musical monotony, there has been a decided lack of big time album releases. Many of the anticipated Spring 2020 albums were postponed, some indefinitely. But, for adult soul music fans, all that waiting comes to a head on August 28, when — count ’em — FOUR of the most anticipated soul music albums of the year, all come out ON THE SAME DAY.

Gregory Porter’s All Rise, originally slated for March to accompany his tour with Ledisi, has already issued five singles, and the full disc finally comes on the 28th (Pssst, we’ve already heard it, and it is fantastic). And speaking of Ledisi, she also chose that date for her The Wild Card, which has been pumping out its own excellent advance clips in the Spring and Summer. Then, of course, there is Kem, more than six years removed from his last album, who will be issuing Love Always Wins. He already has a #1 hit from the album with “Lie To Me,” and his brand new duet with Toni Braxton will likely follow. So let’s stay with Toni Braxton. The soul chanteuse releases Spell My Name that day, right after shining once again with the new single, “Dance.”

And in case those four star albums aren’t enough, soul legend Bettye LaVette, prolific soul and gospel man PJ Morton, and singer/trumpeter Johnny Britt have highly anticipated new discs coming on that same date, just for fun.

This is almost too much treasure for one day. It may be a good one to call in sick, and just lay in bed with headphones on. Below is a playlist with some of the advance songs from these upcoming albums, just to warm you up. Enjoy!
