ST Mother’s Day Special: The Chestnut Brothers pay new homage to “Sadie”

(May 10, 2025) Back in the mid-70s the legendary group The Spinners created the ultimate soulful Mother’s Day song. “Sadie,” written by the Philly soul mainstay team of Simmons, Hawes and Jefferson, told the story of a faithful, strong mother who guided her family through both good and challenging times with grace. It remains a highlight of every Spinners concert to this day.

The history of that iconic song isn’t lost on Al and Ty Chestnut, who now give their own version in their latest single, released in time for Mother’s Day 2025. “It carries a deeper meaning for us. After we lost our beloved mother, this song became more than a cover—it became a celebration of life. A message of love, loss and gratitude.”

The new version of “Sadie” has a looser, jazzier feel than the original, led by the work of keyboardist Sebastian Cofie. And the Chestnut Brothers are in fine voice up front. This “Sadie” gives a fresh feel to a familiar song, and it all works great a half century after the tune entered the soul music canon.

Check out “Sadie,” and welcome the talented Chestnut Brothers back to SoulTracks.
