With Ronnie Laws, it has always been a family affair, and he and his siblings have, in their understated way, been among the most influential jazz artists of the past half centurey. Born on October 3, 1950, in Houston, Texas, Laws’ musical journey began when he picked up the saxophone as a child, a path he shared with his talented siblings.
In the 1970s, Ronnie Laws rose to prominence, becoming a leading figure in the jazz fusion movement. And by the time of 1981’s album Solid Ground, Laws was in a rare group of artists who regularly conquered both the jazz and R&B charts.
On that album, which became an across-the-board hit, Laws put down his sax for a moment to also show off his vocal chops. “Stay Awake” was an instant classic ballad that featured Laws’ rich baritone and an unforgettable melody. It became a Quiet Storm classic that brings chills to this day.
