SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award nominee Castella has been one of our favorite vocalists to arise this decade, and her work as both a songwriter and interpreter has led her to top soul music charts around the world.
Lately, Castella has released a series of well thought out covers of classic songs from the 60s and 70s (“Hurt So Bad,” “Nights Over Egypt,” “So Far Away”), powerfully bringing them to a new generation. And her new single may be her most ambitious yet.
“I’m In You” was a 1977 hit for Peter Frampton, fresh from his Frampton Comes Alive emergence. The rock ballad leaped into the top five, but has largely been underappreciated in the years since. So, working with producers Jeff Canady and Darryl Swann, Castella has breathed new life into the song, giving it a harder rock/funk edge than the original, and placing her always-expressive vocals on top of the arrangement.
The result is another winning release for the California-based artist, and one that should connect with both soul and pop audiences. Check out this reimagined “I’m In You” below; it is our latest SoulTracks Song of the Month.
