From its opening foot stomps, rhythmic hand claps, tambourine rings, and driving guitar, “Someday,” the song from young Eddie Gomez, manages to tap into the old sounds of soul, the blues, roots music—all things Americana on “Someday.” Strip out the guitar and electronic bassline elements, and what’s left is a good, old-fashioned work or field song that holds up nicely all on its own. With a gritty, rock-infused voice, the Portland-born, LA-based Eddie Gomez delivers a brown-eyed soul one has rarely heard since the heydays of José Feliciano, WAR, and Los Lobos. His six-song, unsung 2013 debut EP, No, is a powerful showcase of the singer-songwriters talent and facility with many different sounds and shades of funk, soul, rock, and pop music, often all at once. While he missed our attention last year, thanks to recent placement on various VH1 reality shows with grand slams like “Monsters,” Gomez has certainly landed on our radar. And with solid work like “Someday,” now that we’ve found him, we’re never letting go.
