While his occasional sanctimoniousness can detract from it, Jackson Browne has always been an excellent songwriter. And his compositions of social awareness have never sounded better than they do on Some Bridges, the new album by LA-based music teacher and social activist Fred Martin and his Levite Camp choir. Organic production and absolutely glorious vocal arrangements bring new life to both recent and classic songs, especially on the title cut, the jazzy "The Next Voice You Hear," and a wonderful medley of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" and the Gospel standard "Until I Found The Lord," with guest Keb Mo. The release of Some Bridges is an unusual release for a mainstream label like Concord Records, but it is a left field treat that brings beautiful new context to a batch of wonderful songs. Recommended.
