The title of Salah Ananse’ latest project, Late Night Affair, is definitive of its overall sound – an ambiently laid back groove. There is no doubt that Ananse has something to show for his 16 plus years of experience as a DJ, having opened for a neo-soul lover’s fantasy team. A resume that includes opening for folks like Raphael Saadiq, India Arie and The Roots speaks for itself.
This CD was sent to me in the form of a download, so I’m still trying to upgrade my technological savvy to put a few of the tracks onto my Ipod. One of those tracks, "Affliction," features Kebbi Williams and a beat that is a must for a low-lit, white wine serving establishment. "Evermore" featuring Gaelle, makes me think of a melody rescued from the 80’s with a hint of Eurythmics for flavoring. I would seek hypnosis more often if tracks like "Wonder" featuring Zynzelay were used to put me under. My favorite track is "Yes," a remix with Anthony David. If you really know your music, you’ll recognize that some of the lyrics from this track are on a remake that Mr. David has on his album.
Overall, I wasn’t too impressed with the lyrical content of this project, but the mood of Late Night Affair refuses to let me care too much about that.
