Oceans (2006)

Junior-Oceans.jpg

2006 has been full of surprises from the "old school," with the first two months bringing new albums by the Whispers and the Persuaders.  And now, happily, out of nowhere comes the first new album in well over a decade by 80s star Junior.  And it's a gem.  Beginning with the uber-infectious "Friends," Oceans runs through a grab bag of rhythmic cuts that are the natural evolution of Junior's 80s work but which sound absolutely fresh.  His voice is confident and strong throughout and, while the album is highly electronic, the largely synthesized arrangements work well with the bouncy, percussive material.  The songwriting is also strong front to back, with tracks such as the title cut, "Closer," "Gotta Get Through This" and "All I Do" standing on par with Junior's best work.  Oceans is a welcome return of a talented artist and a great find for fans of well-written, rhythmic soul.  Highly Recommended.
